More Thompson Fun!

Nothing like continual Jack Thompson antics to both amuse and annoy the world.

Recently this lawyer found himself in Florida court, yet again, but for a different reason. Jack stood (well, sat) in court for a second time over this case recently, but in question of being trialed for contempt! Jack didn’t back down for a second, and after judge Friedman pointed out Jack’s unlawful attitude and past accusations, he then removed himself from the case. The next judge “may not be as kind” he stated. You can find a video of these proceedings here, though it’s a little quiet (from destructiod.com). There’s some hilarious antics in there, including his big cardboard sign (who knows what drivel that says), and his downright arrogant attitude. He’s the reason for making me a violent gamer.

His fatality would involve
ripping out your heart, then eating it.

Also, to top things off in the “Jack’s a raving lunatic” case, he also took the time to send Midway a “cease and desist” letter over Mortal Kombat Armageddon, due to this article from gamingtarget.com. The article is basically a joke, they’ve created a bunch of characters in the newest Mortal Kombat’s “Kreate A Fighter” mode, including Jack, Ash (from Evil Dead), Hulk Hogan, etc. Somehow people are confusing this, and Jack attacked Midway directly for unlawfully using his name, and images of himself. Sigh.

Midway haven’t responded yet. If they do, I imagine it would be something like this -

“Hahahahahahahahahahaha”

Halo movie parts with Universal and FOX.

In the works for a while now, the HALO movie produced by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, is in danger of being completely canned.

Both financers of the production, Universal and 20th Century FOX,
have pulled out of the deal, supposedly scared by the rising cost of
filming. Now the production company have found themselves out looking
for a new financer, currently undetermined. Whilst a pretty big deal,
and a slight threat to the film, it will most likely still carry on.
It’s gone a bit far and gained too much attention to be cancelled at
this stage.

HALO is set to be released late 2007/early 2008. Still quite a wait on this one.

Die Hard daughter, villain and nerd.

With Live Free or Die Hard filming right now, there is no surprise that Die Hard news is being released or leaked every couple of days. Here’s a few titbits for you:

Daughter of Bruce Willis’ character John McClane has been cast, and the actress is uber hottie Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

It turns out a previously reported Die Hard villain rumour is false, as it has been confirmed Timothy Olyphant will play the main villain in Die Hard 4.

Justin Long’s character has been confirmed to be a hacker who helps McClain and not his son. Also rumoured is a relationship between Long’s and Winstead’s characters.

If you can’t wait until Live Free or Die Hard check out The Ballad of John McClane for a laugh. (Warning! Die Hard spoilers)

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars Cast.

EA recently announced the star studded cast for the live action cut scenes in their new highly anticipated game, Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.

EA Press Release:

“REDWOOD CITY, Calif., October 18, 2006 – Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced that the highly-anticipated Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars™ (C&C 3) game will feature an all-star celebrity line-up for its high-definition, live action video sequences from critically-acclaimed television series such as “LOST” and “Battlestar Galactica,” blockbuster films such as Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi (1980, 1983), Top Gun (1986), Starship Troopers (1997), and The Wedding Crashers (2005), and a former Miss USA pageant winner. The unparalleled, diverse cast includes Tricia Helfer, Josh Holloway, Michael Ironside, Billy Dee Williams, Grace Park, Ivana Bozilovic, Shauntay Hinton, and more!

Executive Producer Mike Verdu explains, “Telling a story with a mix of live action and high-end movie-quality computer graphics has been one of the hallmarks of the Command & Conquer (C&C) series. I am delighted that we are bringing the rich game world and epic story for C&C 3 to life with an amazing cast and stunning CG effects – and I can’t wait for gamers to see the results. These very talented actors have added tremendous depth and dimension to the C&C 3 game experience.”

“When I realized that I wasn’t going to be a computer-generated character, but playing a live action role in the C&C 3 game, I was really looking forward to see what was in store,” said Tricia Helfer, famous for her role in the Scifi television series “Battlestar Galactica.” “Having completed my shoots for the game recently, I can honestly say that it was one of the most fun projects I’ve worked on…and my costume was awesome.”

“This is the most fun I’ve had since Star Wars!” said Billy Dee Williams, celebrated actor, on the set of the live action shoot for C&C 3. “The game’s story and universe are immersive and drew me right in. I was intrigued by my character, GDI Director Redmond Boyle, because he has more depth than I expected from a video game personality. His polished exterior gradually breaks down as the world is plunged into chaos and he eventually shows his true nature under extreme pressure.”

It doesn’t stop there! C&C 3 will also feature real-life news reporters assuming the roles they know best—anchors and field reporters bringing the world the latest news on the third Tiberium War. These roles are played by John Huck, anchor of the FOX affiliate in Las Vegas and Shanon Cook, freelance reporter for a major news network. These reporters pull from their everyday work to update the world on the devastating war and environmental catastrophes in the game’s story.

Additionally, the actor who originated the main role of the maniacal leader of the Brotherhood of Nod in the C&C series, Joe Kucan, is reprising his role as Kane in C&C 3. Millions of C&C fans were elated to hear Kucan would be returning to the series when EA revealed the news this summer.”

Pan’s Labyrinth trailers and posters.

panslabyrinth4.jpg
The new trailer and teaser for Guillermo del Toro (Director: Hellboy; Blade II) new thriller fantasy Pan’s Labyrinth is out and it looks pretty damn cool. Pan’s Labyrinth is pretty much a twisted version of a lot of childrens stories like Alice in Wonderland or Chronicles of Narnia; similar to Jim Henson’s Labyrinth except darker and David Bowie isn’t in it.

Battlefield 2142 – More than what you paid for?

932358_74234_front.jpg
Already out in most the world, and hitting shelves tomorrow in Australia, Battlefield 2142 from EA Games seems to include an extra little “package” in the form of advertising spyware. A photo that was brought to my attention labels this quite nicely as to what it includes, you can see it here. A little bit of research also resulted in this link.

It’s obvious EA Games have finally gone mad with power. If it isn’t enough to hand over your cash for their title, being hit with in game advertising is a bit unnecessary. Now the inclusion of data-gathering spyware for this advertising, well that’s just ridiculous. The game is set to be one of the biggest releases of the year, judging by the hype it’s recieved. Brushing upon the “casual gamer” issue, EA Games are well known for cashing in on a market of gamers who don’t know better. Unfortunately, the Battlefield franchise is one which attracts both casual and hardcore gamers alike. I honestly doubt this bold action will affect sales in any noticable way. As listed in the image, the alternative to installing spyware is to not install BF2142 at all.

That sounds like a better option to me.

(Oh, and this story IS REAL for those with doubts).

Clover studios to close down

Very glum news has washed up, Clover Studios, a Capcom subsidary, will be closing doors somewhere in the first half of 2007. Clover Studios were responsible for titles such as Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2, and the recent Okami smash. Capcom made the decision as an attempt to organise company structure.

Of course the great Clover titles were and still will be fully owned by Capcom, so don’t expect them to disappear. We all know how heavily Capcom cling onto a profitable franchise. I’m expecting a bajillion more Viewtiful Joe titles, and an Okami 2 is more than likely. Alongside Street Fighter XVIIVX and Megaman 68.

So overall this may not be a big loss at all. Heck, it may not be ANY loss, for all we know the Clover staff could just pack up and move into a big CAPCOM building. Either way, don’t expect that nifty light voiced “clover” screen on any new titles.

Hot Fuzz teasers.

hot-fuzz-01.jpg
2004 was a hell of a year for American comedy, with the massive hits Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, but the U.S wasn’t the only country to make us spurt milk out of our noses as the U.K hit hard and hilarious with Shaun of the Dead.

Well the freaking geniuses who brought you Shaun are finally back with Hot Fuzz, a story which is basically about really stupid cops and the shenanigans they get into, think Super Troopers but with more action.

You can check out the two new teaser trailers for Hot Fuzz below.

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2007 explained.

For those of you who don’t know, the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is the biggest gaming event in the world. It annualy brings together everyone from around the world who make, design, produce, and play video games for a hands-on extravaganza in Los Angeles. Not anymore though; as announced not long ago, E3 will be downsizing to a smaller, more intimate event. This is nothing new, what is new though, is the time and location that E3 will be moving to.

I’m stealing this one straight from IGN, as they’re not listing a source on this news at all. The new E3 is to be held on July 11-13 in Santa Monica, California. Slight change in date, huge change in venue. As opposed to 2006′s May 10-12 Los Angeles Convention Center happenings, E3 2007 will take place across “several hotels”, hosting small luncheon sessions, designated gaming areas of 100-400 feet, and “evening parties”.

e3-logo.gif

Personally, attending E3 has always been a life goal of mine. It’ll be interesting to see how 2007 goes down, and exactly how many people they’ll get in. Members of the gaming press surely must be able to attend, yet admission will be much more strict now. Surely the same amount of gaming goodness will still emerge at the end of the day? Or will hungry gamers world-wide go a bit malnourished next July?

Without the hustle and bustle of a big-time conference centre to showcase hundreds of developers wares, where will it all go down now? Maybe less developers/producers will be present at the event?

We’ll have to wait for a few more details it seems. My guess is higher coverage on less products, which seems logical.

Right?
