Review: Blades of Glory
It’s not often that I would call a movie gay. Indeed, the political incorrectness of calling a movie gay is something one should consider before making the claim. But I’m going to go out on a limb here and say it straight.
Blades of Glory is a very, very gay movie.
This is not to say Blades of Glory is a bad movie. Indeed, it provided a few of laughs. However, much of the humour found in this movie is the awkward nature of two men in tight, sequined spandex, whilst holding each other in positions only found in the Karma Sutra whilst skating on ice.
Will Ferrell is up to his old tricks really. Titles like Talladega Nights, Anchorman and A Night on the Roxbury have all been successes due to the way he takes the piss. To be honest, I think Will Ferrell is one of the best actors to send something up, and ridicule it in an amusing fashion for an hour and a half.
Blades of Glory sees Ferrell somewhat successfully patronise a sport I think most would see as boring. With Jon Heder’s character resembling a 12 year old girl, and both Amy Poehler and Will Arnett doing their best to go one better on ‘Kissing Cousins’, the acting was amusing, without being extraordinary.
Ferrell as Chazz Michael Michaels was his typical ridiculous self. Considering he showed the depth of acting talent he possesses with his efforts in Stranger than Fiction I found his character to be very similar to Ricky Bobby out of Talladega Nights. Whilst Ferrell is an amusing, chauvinistic character (Indeed, his antics reminded me of Anthony Mundine when he states ‘I am figure skating!’) as with most of these types of movies, there is a distinct lack of depth to them.
The movie has some funny parts in it, but overall I don’t think it’s one of his best.
Quite frankly, I’m not left with anything that stands out in my mind as noteworthy. The forbidden move of ‘The Lotus’ I think it was got a laugh or two with it’s fatal consequences if performed incorrectly, but overall the movie is one that I’d recommend you rent if bored one night.
The fact that this is my shortest review to date on a movie is not due to writers’ bloc, but more because there is that much content lacking in the movie. Sure, it’s pure Ferrell in his usual piss-take mood, but after watching Talladega Nights, it just seems like there was a lack of depth offered by Ice Skating for the movie to be actually be something good.
Pros:
-
Some of the skating moves have you cringing whilst laughing
Jenna Fischer is hot
Cons:
-
Nothing noteworthy in terms of humour
Overuse of the ‘Gay’ theme
2.5 / 5
