It’s been one year since the site you see before you was born. Space-Meat has taken a few forms before now including originally my personal blog and then a Google Page. But it wasn’t until I teamed up with Jordan approximately 365 days ago that Space-Meat grew into the site you see today. Two more writers (Ben and Starks) later and we have had exclusive interviews with celebrities, formed relationships with big name entertainment companies, hosted many a competition totalling hundreds of dollars in prizes, and had one hell of a good time.

Now not only are we celebrating this Birthday but we are also welcoming two great new recruits to the writing team, Liam “Gumbuoy” McGinniss and Colin Stevens. Who I’m sure will become valued members of the team. You can read a little more about them on our About Us page.

To celebrate both these occasions we are holding our biggest competition yet. “What the hell?” you ask, “Why are you giving away gifts on YOUR Birthday?” Well that’s simple folks we’re awesome, oh and also the fact that this site wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for our beloved readers.

There are FOUR prize packs containing some very awesome gear to give away, so check out what you can win below and then enter over at our competition page.

2 x Space-Meat 1st Birthday Prize Pack 1:

  • Bioshock T-Shirt
  • The Darkness comic book set (Issues 1 – 5)
  • The Darkness sticker
  • 2 x Space-Meat 1st Birthday Prize Pack 2:

  • $50 iTunes Gift Card
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: The Worlds End bandana
  • Shooter official movie poster
  • Blades of Glory official movie poster
  • comp.jpg

I want to take this time to thank those who have contributed to the site over the year. Paramount (specifically Scott Rhodie) for seeing potential in us and organising the many competitions we have run. 2K Games sending out the games for us to review and for contributing to the prizes in this competition. All our loyal readers and our great writers Ben and Starks. And finally Jordan whose contribution to the site has been huge and rivals my own, thanks buddy.

Unleash your force on the Wii

The light saber game everyone is waiting for on Wii may be coming sooner than expected. Today LucasArts announced that their up-coming hot title Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will be hitting the Wii alongside PS3, XBOX 360, PS2, PSP, and DS. Obviously they’re going all out on this one and why not, it’s another Star Wars title sure to sell like a new Apple product.

It’s great though, The Force Unleashed looks quite interesting with a lot of potential; something new considering a lot of past Star Wars titles. The main interest is the variety of developers across all the platforms. LucasArts are in-house developing the PS3 and XBOX 360 versions, our Brisbane Krome Studios are making the Wii, PS2 and PSP versions; while underground outsource developers n-Space are making the DS versions.

Not only are a whole bunch of people working on a whole bunch of The Force Unleashed games, the series also has a novel, action figures, a comic book, a reference book and a D&D style role playing game.

    forceunleashed.jpg

The game looks impressive with it’s next-gen engine incorporating some nice physics with the force powers we all love. Now with the Wii version on the way, EVERYONE can buy more Star Wars games. If only my excitement weren’t clouded so by the constant reminder that LucasArts aren’t making many adventure games anymore.

A few official statements from LucasArts –

“offering owners the unique chance to live out their Jedi fantasies by wielding the Wii Remote™ as a lightsaber while using the Nunchuk™ controller to torment foes with their Force powers. ” I don’t think ‘chuck’ is spelled like that.

“The Wii is a great platform for The Force Unleashed, because the console’s motion-oriented controllers really bring the game to life”

“We’ve worked hard to make the Wii version of the game unique in order to truly let you unleash the Force.” Sounds threatening.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is slated for an Autumn 2008 release across all those platforms I mentioned before.

What movie is it going to be?

There’s an extremely popular YouTube clip going around called What’s it Gonna Be?, it’s a music video by Mike O’Connell featuring Dr Ken (Ken Jeong) off the Million $ Strong album. I know I can here you saying, “God damn that was hilarious, but how is this movie news?”, well it seem MTV has optioned to make a movie based on the album Million $ Strong. It will star Mike O’Connell as a delusional rapper and Ken Jeong as his Asian foreign exchange student friend, and will follow them as they take on the hip-hop world. This sounds fantastic to me as Dr Ken was great in Knocked Up and Mike O’Connell is absolutely hilarious.

Fun “Fact”: Dr Ken isn’t Ken Jeong’s nickname or rapper name he is actually a doctor. Which makes this deleted scene from Knocked Up even more hilarious.

    Armageddon: To do list

    armageddon_header.jpg

I’m absolutely stoked for the upcoming pop culture Melbourne and Sydney based expo, the Armageddon Expo. When I first read the huge list of guests and events I thought, “What the hell? How can they fit so much awesomeness it to just two days?” well here’s how…

    Review: Stardust

    stardust.jpg

    Star light, star bright,
The first star I see tonight,
    I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have the wish I wish tonight.

I find one of the more interesting trends of movie makers in the last 15 years has been their fixation with recreating stories on the silver screen associated with being ‘children’s favourites’. From fairy tale stories like The Brothers Grimm, and The Lord of the Rings, to children’s hits like Spider-Man and Transformers, it’s now the money-making formula to take an existing story, spruce it up, do ‘justice’ to the franchise, and then sit back to count the money that will roll in. Good or bad, these types of movies are traditionally ones that, well, use the creative flair of someone, and then are interpreted, correctly or not, by someone else.

Sure, the script and things like that are feasibly ‘new’, but those who had read the comic book would 99% be able to tell you what the Spider-Man was going to be about. Usually speaking, book to film adaptations are not only difficult to achieve properly, but tend to earn the ire of fans who love the written version. However, my overall look to this movie was really positive. I walked out thinking – and this is contrary to some movies I’ve seen lately – ‘Wow, I don’t think I’ve seen a movie quite like that for a good while.’

    Space-Meat wants you!

    space-meat-sig-13.jpg

It’s that time again folks, when we are growing so big our pants no longer fit… and we need to buy new pants. You’re the new pants in that analogy and the growing is due to the huge increase in readers and content in-flow. Simply put to give you guys the best reviews on the top movies, games and music we need more reviewers. Last time we recruited we hit the jack pot with Starks, who was glad to be sent to many a movie premiere or advanced screening. So if you are interested in expressing your views on the latest games, movies and music, you should probably consider joining our crack team of writers.

We will consider each applicant based on:

Writing skills: If your email includes, “I g00d wRiTiNg 5killz”, don’t waste our time.

Humour: We like our reviews and news article to be informative but the main reason people would want to read anything on our site is to be entertained. So the funnier you are the better your chances just don’t go over the top.

Location: Where you live determines what events you can go to, and one of the main perks of writing for us is the cool events and movie screenings.

Time: You have to be willing to put in your time. Obviously this isn’t a paying job so we don’t expect you to spend massive amounts of time on us, but if you are given a review to do we expect you to complete it as timely as possible. Also the more you can contribute to the news updates the better.

Open Mind: To quote Kuato (that disgusting mutant coming out of the dudes stomach in Total Recall) “Open your mind”. Basically don’t be too much of a fanboy, we don’t mind if you have strong opinions but when you’re reviewing you need to be able to take both sides of the argument and find both the good and bad points about something.

To apply for a position at Space-Meat please email your application to liam@space-meat.com. Be sure to include your information as well as an example of your writing.

Call Of Duty 4 BETA Preview

    cod4logo.jpg

    “Buuuurgundy”

    “BUUUUURGUNDY”

The calls of my mates throughout the household as the next map loads. Call Of Duty 2 has been a great past-time for myself, from the impactive single player campaign right through to the 7+ man house LANs as we troll Internode, Gamearena, and anyone else out there who wants a face full of Phaxx shells.

Now with Call Of Duty 4 (CoD 4) looming ever so closer, people around the world (including myself) are already shaping up to the challenge in the exclusive beta released recently. Unlike the thousands out there who managed to exploit Microsoft and Activision and get into the beta illegitimately; I managed to have a good legal romp last night through a few maps and the old game modes, DM, TDM, S&D, CTF; etc.

    Iron Man trailer

    im1.jpg

The upcoming comic book action flick Iron Man is easily one of my most anticipated films of 2008, so after having nothing to watch but grainy camera footage from Comicon I’m ecstatic to present the first official trailer. Iron Man is directed by comic book fanboy Jon Favreau, and in probably the greatest casting choice ever it stars Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark a billionaire weapons engineer who after being critically injured is forced to create a device to keep him alive, he then goes on to create a battle suit to fight crime.

Iron Man trailer 1 – QuickTime | QuickTime HD

Fun “Fact”: In the recent Marvel Civil War comics Iron Man went from one of the worlds greatest heroes to one of the worlds biggest dicks.

    John Rambo montage-o-death

The upcoming sequel to the Rambo franchise cleverly titled John Rambo, is actually looking pretty good. Sylvester Stallone adds heaps of blood and gore in an effort to revamp the old action classic series, like he previously did with the similarly titled Rocky Balboa.

Check out this new clip which is more a montage of John Rambo killing people then it is a trailer.
