Unleash your force on the Wii

The light saber game everyone is waiting for on Wii may be coming sooner than expected. Today LucasArts announced that their up-coming hot title Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will be hitting the Wii alongside PS3, XBOX 360, PS2, PSP, and DS. Obviously they’re going all out on this one and why not, it’s another Star Wars title sure to sell like a new Apple product.

It’s great though, The Force Unleashed looks quite interesting with a lot of potential; something new considering a lot of past Star Wars titles. The main interest is the variety of developers across all the platforms. LucasArts are in-house developing the PS3 and XBOX 360 versions, our Brisbane Krome Studios are making the Wii, PS2 and PSP versions; while underground outsource developers n-Space are making the DS versions.

Not only are a whole bunch of people working on a whole bunch of The Force Unleashed games, the series also has a novel, action figures, a comic book, a reference book and a D&D style role playing game.

The game looks impressive with it’s next-gen engine incorporating some nice physics with the force powers we all love. Now with the Wii version on the way, EVERYONE can buy more Star Wars games. If only my excitement weren’t clouded so by the constant reminder that LucasArts aren’t making many adventure games anymore.

A few official statements from LucasArts -

“offering owners the unique chance to live out their Jedi fantasies by wielding the Wii Remote™ as a lightsaber while using the Nunchuk™ controller to torment foes with their Force powers. ” I don’t think ‘chuck’ is spelled like that.

“The Wii is a great platform for The Force Unleashed, because the console’s motion-oriented controllers really bring the game to life”

“We’ve worked hard to make the Wii version of the game unique in order to truly let you unleash the Force.” Sounds threatening.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is slated for an Autumn 2008 release across all those platforms I mentioned before.

Hehe, After Brawl I’ll be surprised if I could squeeze any more fun out of my overused nunchuck and wii remote. (Not going to call it a wiimote).

I’ve been a fan of the lucas arts games though, it’ll be interesting to see what they do, their Starwars line of games have been all over the shop, Some I couldn’t be bothered with (Shadows of the empire, N64) And some I just couldn’t put down (jedi knight 2, Rouge squadron)… that reminds me… any word on a new rouge squadron =o?

Game looks good, Nextgen starwars is always something to be excited about.

You know, I’m going to take an educated guess with this one and say that it will make my cry vomit.
Lucas Arts have some heavy street cred with me, but the chances of them incorporating the Wiimote effectively are about as high as me being a Jedi, “for reals yo”. I hate to piss in anyone’s breakfast, but if this is being released on every platform ever conceived, then the use of one consonle’s unique technonology to it’s maximum potential is unlikely at best.

There have been scarce few games that properly utilise the Wiimote, and like rare diamonds their mystic discs glisten upon the shelves of EB, far out of my reach, however this metal is certainly not going to be the hardest know to man.
