Review: NBA 2K8 (XBOX 360)

Developer: Visual Concepts
Publisher: 2K Games
Available on: XBOX 360, PS3, PS2

While Colin is strapping on his bladed skates and hitting the ice on NHL 2K8, I’m going to lace up and foray into a more vertical sporting outing with 2K’s NBA 2K8; aptly named to include it’s publishers insignia of course. Read more [+]

20th Century FOX signs Mark Wahlberg to Max Payne movie

While the film rights to Max Payne were sold and actioned some time ago now, our first signs of solid movement are taking place for this film adaptation of one of my personal favourite games ever.

While still in negotiation, Mark Wahlberg (Shooter, The Departed) has been revealed to play the role of the cop with nothing to lose, Max Payne. While I question if Marky Mark has the testosterone level to fill the role it’s a big sign of the direction for this film and it’s blockbuster intentions.

John Moore (Flight Of The Phoenix, Behind Enemy Lines) will be handling the direction side of things.

The Tintin Trilogy

Tintin and Snowy

The Adventures of Tintin is a comic book series that was created by Georges Remi (better known as Hergé) in 1929 and over time has spawned several adaptations including a video game, two animated series, stage plays and live action films. So it’s highly likely that you’ve heard of the escapades of journalist Tintin and his canine companion, Snowy. The latest adaptation of the Hergé creation is an animated trilogy of films. The production is in early stages of development and details are scarce, but read on and find out what is known and what could be.

Crysis: Take a Demo for a Spin

It has been the talk of the gaming community, best PC game of the 2006 E3 and runner up in 2007, and most highly anticipated tech demo in recent history. Crysis has transcended being merely another release – it has come to symbolise the advances in PC gaming technology. Being the first of the true Direct X10 titles, well it might. The development stable has sired Far Cry, itself a measure of AI and graphical goodness, and now with the backing of EA the expectation has finally reached fruition in the form of the first playable demo to be released to the public. The expectation has only grown with the controversy surrounding the split between Ubisoft (who kept the Far Cry IP) and Crytek, adding fuel to an already blazing fire. What effect will all of this back story have on the game itself? Will Crytek be able to produce something that the fans have hoped for, or that the critics will tear apart with customary relish? The animals!

The Last Last Starfighter

“Greetings Starfighter, you have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Zur and the Kodan Amada.”

What self respecting Geek does not know the origins of this quote? The teen boy fantasy flick ‘The Last Starfighter’ took us all of a journey gamers have fantasised about – being so good that an intergalactic army, fighting an evil beyond comprehension to save galaxy kind, recruits you as their top gun. And to top it off, you get the girl… if you’re a big fan, probably your first girl. Although it’s a little far fetched to think that a game could be used as a military recruitment tool…

It seems I’m not the only fan. Some boffin has gone and recreated the game from the movie, and even built an exact replica of the arcade cabinet! The best part is that you can download the game and play it on your home PC. Just make sure you have holidays booked if you crack the high score.

Writers hate Mondays

If you haven’t heard already, for months now there has been an ever looming threat that the Writers Guild of America would strike. The strike which could potentially put a money haemorrhaging hold on every film currently in the writing stage is apparently now set to start on Monday.

Variety reports:
“In a lively meeting of 3,000 guild members Thursday night, the WGA’s negotiating committee announced its unanimous strike recommendation, a pronouncement that generated an enthusiastic response from the SRO crowd at the Los Angeles Convention Center… But it’s a foregone conclusion that the WGA panels will OK a strike and the consensus is that they’ll probably select Monday as the starting day.”

The hot topic that buggered up any hope of settlement? Why DVD and internet residuals of course.

“Hopes for a settlement cratered Wednesday night amid bitter recriminations from both sides. The meltdown occurred when companies insisted that the WGA drop its demand to increase homevid residuals, including Internet downloads.”

Well it’s official get ready for a hell of a lot more reality TV, and you know that movie that was just announced that you were all stoked for? Yeah not anytime soon buddy.

Fun “Fact”: Many films were pushed through before the strike, including the Justice League movie. Unfortunately they finished “writing” it already, so it won’t be delayed/cancelled.

Australian Films Underway

Sweet cheesy Jesus there are a lot Australian features being made. Last time I checked out the in-production section of Inside Film we had half a dozen features in the works. But now at the time of writing, we have five in development, nine in pre-production, ten in production and thirty-one in post production. Not to mention that this list isn’t comprehensive either, for example, From Parts Unknown isn’t on this list. The point is that Australia has a lot of feature films in the works right now. Whether all of these films will make to completion is up for debate, but only time will tell.

Using a highly mathematical method, I picked out a few films to look into.
