Review: The Golden Compass

The Golden Compass

In 2000 there was a film called Memento which told the story of a man who’d lost his long term memory and could only retain fifteen minutes at a time and yet was trying to find his wife’s killer. Oh, and the film was told backwards. If Christopher Nolan was able to make such a twisted story both cohesive and comprehensible, then how the bloody hell did Chris Weitz manage to make The Golden Compass so aimless and confusing? Granted, the film is based on the first in a trilogy of books by Phill Pullman, and so in the transition from page to screen some storytelling must be abridged. Not to mention that this film is intended to be the first in a trilogy of films. But even taking this into account The Golden Compass fails at structure, pacing and exposition.

Review: Call Of Duty 4 (PS3)

This review was written exclusively for Space-Meat by Jelani Stevens. Check out Jarnz other stuff here!

Developer: Infinity Ward
Publisher: Activision
Available On: PC, XBOX 360, PS3, NDS (n-Space)

Call of Duty, the next in the series with a little twist. In this game we are taken away from the WWII setting we have grown to love in the COD series and have been dropped in the middle of modern warfare. This is a risky change as the previous COD games have always fitted perfectly in the WWII sub-genre of FPS, meaning the leap into the modern day sub-genre could be a mistake with other games like Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six making their names dominate in that field. I for one was very pleased to find the game was addictive and really well done, couldn’t put the controller down. Read more [+]

Merry Christmas from the whole Space Meat team

Well the title says it all folks, yes it’s Christmas Day. The day we get together with friends and family, exchange gifts, eat tons of food, and celebrate the holy birth of a great man… Sir Isaac Newton. But those are not the only Christmas traditions, no there are many more. Including the tradition of cozing up at the end of the day and watching your favourite Christmas movie. Wether it be It’s a Wonderful Life or The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, each of us has a Christmas movie that connects to us in some way. So to help you decide which you are going to enjoy this Christmas here is my list of my top 5 favourite Christmas movies.

5. Home Alone
Back when Macaulay Culkin was cute and Joe Pesci had a career Home Alone was a laugh out loud slap stick Christmas comedy. Unfortunately the sequel took the Christmas theme to the extreme and turned the sap up to 11 without increasing the funny.

4. Bad Santa
Back when Billy Bob Thornton was cute and Bernie Mac still wasn’t funny Bad Santa was a black Christmas comedy that you couldn’t help but love, while simultaneously hating Billy Bob Thornton’s character.

3. The Nightmare Before Christmas
The only way this film could of been creepier was if it starred Billy Bob as Santa but it was still an amazingly well made claymation Christmas musical.

2. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
As much as I love this film it always makes me sad. I can’t help but wish National Lampoon was still a badge that meant the movie wouldn’t suck harder then Paris Hilton. And let’s not forget Chevy Chase, yet another hilarious actor to be lost in time.

1. Die Hard
Despite the new half decent sequel Die Hard is still the greatest action movie of all time as well as the greatest Christmas movie of all time. Now some people may say I’m cheating and that this isn’t a real Christmas movie. But I say to them, what is the spirit of Christmas if it isn’t to love each over and kill terrorists? What?

Well looking back on those films and remembering when movies didn’t suck I now see why more people commit suicide today then any other time of the year. Merry Christmas you filthy animals and a happy New Year.

Review: Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)

Developer: Nintendo EAD
Publisher: Nintendo
Available On: Wii

Nintendo’s natural order of things seems to have built up to a pinnacle. We’ve had next-gen Zelda. Recently Samus hit the Wii in Metroid Prime 3. Most of the other loved Nintendo names have had their big next-gen outing and now it’s time for the main moustached man to step back in and take his crown as the Nintendo king. In an intergalactic blast of an outing, Super Mario Galaxy takes the most famous name in gaming into outer space to defy gravity, journey across galaxies, and explore a whole range of worlds new and old. Duke’s back, baby.

Duke Nukem Forever – the game that re-designed the concept of “prolonged development”.

Slated with a release date of “When It’s Done”, the 10 year (so far) development cycle of Duke Nukem Forever has captured the attention of many avid gamers ready for another round of babes, guns and aliens.

It’s not too surprising then that the concept of a new teaser for Duke Nukem Forever has sparked a sudden interest in many. Joe Siegler of 3D Realms has revealed what is emphasised as a teaser to be released Wednesday 19th, around noon CST.

3D Realms have never let down on Duke Nukem Forever, with the odd screenshot or update surfacing every few years. Of course many question if we’ll ever see DNF, or Duke again at all. This teaser doesn’t promise much, and doesn’t seem to symbolize any update in when/if DNF will be ready so now we shall wait.

Update – 20 Dec 2007 @ 7:30PM:

Well the trailer’s out and I’m impressed. Of course it’s all pre-rendered, but a few nice scenes of alien gore coupled with great music and Duke dialogue reinforces the possibility of seeing DNF.

The Dark Knight trailer

Well it’s official this movie is going to kick all kinds of arse. The new trailer for The Dark Knight shows off plenty of Heath Ledger’s brilliant interpretation of The Joker, as well as the new wide shot style that director Christopher Nolan said he got the idea from the excellent film Heat.

The Dark Knight posters

If The Dark Knight isn’t your most anticipated film of next year then you are either a huge fan of Edward Norton (The Incredible Hulk), like your heroes rich alcoholics (Iron Man), or you are trying hard not to think about it too much because if you realise Indiana Jones 4 is also coming out next year your head will explode. Here are the incredible new posters for Batman Begins sequel. Click the posters enlarge and the jump for all the posters.

My Name is Bruce trailer

I have a huge man crush on Bruce Campbell and I’m not afraid to say it because I’m not the only one. Bruce has an army of loyal fans, is a cult hero and one of the most respected, beloved, and critically underrated actors ever. His biggest hit was the Evil Dead series and since then he has been in many a B movie and cancelled TV show. Popping up every now and again in a hilarious Spider-Man cameo or in an out of nowhere cult hit (Bubba Ho-Tep).

Bruce’s newest film My Name is Bruce see’s him playing himself as he is recruited by a huge fan to rid a town of an ancient evil monster. Unfortunately for Bruce this monster isn’t made of paper Mache and red food colouring.

Fun “Fact”: For those of you who still doubt this film’s possible and likely hilarity, you should check Bruce’s audio-play/book Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way. I highly recommend the audio-play version of this book as it has a full backing soundtrack, sound effects and cast, which only adds to the awesomeness.

Farewell to Auran, Fury for free

Following up on last week’s debacle, despite CEO Tony Hilliam’s reassurance, Auran has now closed doors and is heading into liquidation. All current staff are to be laid off, while compensated with the usual redundancies and leaving packages.

This takes 70 Aussie developers out of a job and certainly doesn’t make a high point in one of the biggest games to come out of Australia, Fury. Despite an official closing, Auran will stay true to it’s word and re-hire a small group of developers to focus on future content for Fury.

Bad news for Aussie developers, good news for cheap gamers. Fury is now free to download come December 14!

The free version of Fury is not timed, while hindering players with a lower loot collection rate then that of paid players. The free release co-incides with the first (also free) content expansion titled “The Age Of The Chosen”.

Farewell Auran, it’s been fun.
