Del Toro’s Hobbit

Dreams do come true, it’s been now unequivocally proven. It was announced sometime ago that New Line was planning on making the J.R Tolkien Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit into a movie. It was later announced that Rings director Peter Jackson would be taking the producer seat on this one and that a new director will be taking the reigns. This was met with mixed reactions but personally I believed it to be a good thing, as although I loved the Lord of the Rings movies I always thought The Hobbit had a much darker and smaller theme, which would suit a different director. So it’s now been official announced that Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth director and a favourite of mine, Guillermo Del Toro will be directing the now double feature film story.

GTA IV Dated, Simultaneous World-Wide Release!

After many delays and sometime after the old scheduled date of October 16, 2007, the next chapter in Grand Theft Auto has been slated with a worldwide release date of April 29, 2008.It seems the first delay was entirely based around market competition, Rockstar holding their financial juggernaut back for the right moment to release and maximise sales.

Great for Rockstar, poor for consumers, now that GTA IV has a solid worldwide release date a sunset has appeared on the horizon. Anyone who has been following Space-Meat or knows of my existance should appreciate how excited I am for this. It’s also pretty nifty that we Aussies won’t have to hear how great it is from overseas while we wait for a PAL conversion.

RIP: Heath Ledger (1979 – 2008)

Well known and talented Australian actor Heath Ledger was found dead today in his Apartment in SoHo, New York, of an apparent drug overdose. Ledger was found by a housekeeper and a massage therapist, who entered the bedroom to find him face down, naked, and unconscious at the foot of his bed with sleeping pills on a nearby night table. Prescription medication was found in the bathroom. It is not know whether this was an intentional overdose or not but statements from friends and family are that there were no signs of depression. One theory is that he unintentionally overdosed while trying to relieve symptoms of Pneumonia. I will update this article when more facts are known.

Review: National Treasure: Book of Secrets

Book of Secrets poster

Jerry Bruckheimer might produce a lot of crap, but if he’s done any good in this world it has been the Pirates of the Caribbean films and the National Treasure films. National Treasure came out in 2004 and featured one of greatest (and admittedly, perhaps the most ridiculous) premise I’ve heard of in an adventure film: that there was a map leading to a fabulous Templar treasure hidden on the back of the Declaration of Independence. National Treasure was just so passionately fuelled by a sense of adventure, patriotism and clever use of actual American history that it was one of the most enjoyable films of that year. But when you’ve done the Declaration of Independence; the most influential document ever written in America, where can you go from there? But I’m thrilled to report that the sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets recaptures the spirit of its predecessor and is a fantastically exciting film, most likely thanks to the fact that just about all the crew and cast have returned for the sequel.

Diary of the Dead trailer

Zombie pioneer George Romero has recently released the trailer for his latest film in his ongoing series of zombie horror films. This one is titled Diary of the Dead and seems to take on a different format to his previous films. The lead character Jason (Joshua Close) is an apsiring documentary filmmaker who keeps the camera rolling as the people start rising from the dead and wrecking havoc. You can’t quite tell from the trailer if the entire film will be seen from the prespective of Jason’s camera, The Blair Witch Project style, or if we’ll sometimes be viewing the action from another perspective. There’s a couple of quick shots that look like they’re shot on a tripod and there’s some news footage that suggests the latter. Either way, the format looks like it could yield some interesting results.

Also, there is a contest associated with this trailer where you could have your own zombie film being a special feature on the DVD release of the film. Details will soon be available on the film’s MySpace page.

Review: Enchanted

Enchanted poster

It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed a kids Disney movie. For the past few years the only good Disney have been doing is the Pirates of the Caribbean and releasing Pixar films. While that’s still pretty awesome, it’s been far too long since they’ve created a feature length animated children’s film that didn’t go straight to video and didn’t suck. Strange, seeing as Disney was a pioneer of enchanting, fantasy animated features.

And then in steps Enchanted, a fantasy film which mixes live action with animation and pays homage to many classic animated Disney films. It pays homage not only in the way that it references character archetypes and storytelling devices typical of Disney, but also in the way that it doesn’t suck.

Canned Geek Podcast – Episode 11

null

Just to prove how much of a glory whore I am I was yet again the extra special guest host on this weeks CannedGeek.com podcast. After several hours of Rock Band Kyle, Will and I finally sat down and talked about Action Girlz Racing, Asterix at the Olympic Games, Sweeny Todd, Spamalot, Harold and Kumar 2 and the latest Indiana Jones LEGO. Also despite the fact I was there in person we had some technical difficulties so the audio quality isn’t tops, but if you bear with it you may find a diamond in the ruff or at least a free golf ball.

Review: House Of The Dead 4 (Arcade)

Publisher: SEGA
Developer: SEGA
Available On: Arcade, 360 (TBA)

The House Of The Dead (HOTD) light-gun shooters were always a tentative affair when fiddling with the tokens in my pocket. While the first 3 sported great graphics for their time with a bunch of fun and great zombie shooting action, there were always a few things a little off. The voice acting and dialogue in general has always been terrible, a fitting conduit for a sub-standard plot about zombies and giant evil companies (sound familiar?); and while replaying HOTD games can be unsatisfying after a while, the raw game was always a lot of fun with great graphics, gore and some nice level design.
