I just felt it was out of place and hard to believable, felt like a scene from Bad Boys or something. Just before they made the jump he says he's "ready to kick some Romulan ass," so it fits in his (brief) character that he'd go for a head on action approach over reasoning. But more importantly, the red shirt was more important in setting up just how dangerous this task was. Seeing him brutally tumble over the platform before getting incinerated made things all the more dangerous when watching Sulu land - because we knew just what would happen if things went wrong.
