E3 2009: Mario Returns To The Wii
Many expected the return of Nintendo’s mustached mascot at their E3 press conference this year, but not many knew that two whole new games are set for release on the Wii. Carrie Dunaway and Reggie Fils-Aimie of Nintendo both took the Mario-littered stage to announce New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Trailers were presented for each game so read on for the videos and details.

The first Mario game to feature simultaneous 4 person multiplayer, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a sequel to the excellent DS sidescroller that revitalized the classic Mario formula. This Wii version is looking to take things a little further, with multiplayer opening up new abilities such as carrying and throwing other players, and there’s a bunch of new suits to collect too such as a penguin outfit for freezing enemies. Friends can play as characters such as Toad and Peach, and the fact it’ll be released on disc in stores instead of via WiiWare implies a certain amount of content to expect in this new sidescroller. Release is scheduled for Quarter 4 2009.

For the first time ever, a 3D console Mario adventure is getting a direct sequel. Super Mario Galaxy had a tremendous response and became an instant classic, so it’s no surprise to see that it’s worthy of this honor. The trailer shows gameplay very similar to the original, with many common elements returning such as star travel and the bee suit. New features seem to primarily focus around a particularly hungry Yoshi, who Mario can ride and feed to power up with different abilities. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is scheduled for a 2010 release so there’ll be a few new things to learn yet, let’s just hope Mario has a few tricks saved for his next 3D adventure.
