Competition Closed: Thank you to everyone who entered, the winners will be contacted shortly and their prizes will be sent out to them. If you didn’t win keep an eye on the site or our Twitter (@SpaceMeatAU) for future competitions.

Judge Dredd is without a doubt a classic comic book bad-arse. He judges criminals, never shows his face and has an insane gun.

That got me thinking, where he might rank in the all-time list of comic book bad-arsery. So, for your chance to WIN simply tell us: “Who you think the most ‘bad-arse’ comic book character is and why?”

Do that in the comments below or on Twitter directed at @SpaceMeatAU and you could find yourself winning one of five double passes to DREDD in 3D.

Dredd, a futuristic cop combines the power of judge, jury and executioner in Mega City One, a massive city that stretches down the entire East coast of America. The endlessly inventive minds of writer Alex Garland and director Pete Travis bring DREDD (played by Karl Urban) to life in a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner’s and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip. In Cinemas October 25.

Fund This: Beckoning the Butcher

Local Melbournian film-makers Damien E. Lipp and Dale Alexander are working on their début feature, the documentary style horror film, ‘Beckoning the Butcher’.

The film is currently in the funding stage, up now on the crowd funding site Indie Go Go with 10 days to go and is a great opportunity for film and horror fans to support the local scene.

Check out the teaser below and help these young film-makers reach their goal!

Chris Shaw was an up and coming internet sensation. In his videos he performed rituals he found on the web, testing their legitimacy in summoning spirits. His last video never got to be broadcast – until now.

Chris films everything as he, his girlfriend Tara and their friends Brent, Lorraine and Nicole travel to Brent’s holiday house nestled in the vast, isolated plains of rural Victoria. Once they arrive they prepare and perform the latest ritual Beckoning the Butcher, a mysterious invocation Chris found online, designed to entice a paranormal entity into this world.

All who took part in the ritual that night went missing without a trace. The only clue for investigators was the found footage contained on Chris’s camera. Unfortunately for all involved, the footage itself seemed to pose more questions than to provide answers.

Using interviews from family members, detectives and psychics, along with Chris’s footage, this film aims to piece together the events of that fateful night and determine how the players vanished.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is an alternate history action movie which imagines one of the most beloved presidents of the United States of America as a part time slayer of the blood sucking undead. The screenplay (and the original book on which the film is based) is brought to us by Seth Grahame-Smith, who also wrote Pride And Prejudice And Zombies. So it seems his penchant for taking well known tales and putting his own twist of them continues unabated.

The background story is totally Batman; a young Abe Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) witnesses his mother killed by a vampire and as an adult vows revenge. Then it’s pretty much Batman Begins for a while as Abe is inducted into the ways of vampire hunting by Henry Sturges (Dominic Cooper), an experience vampire hunter. Read more [+]

Exclusive: Kevin Smith reveals cartoon details in Melbourne

At the Jay & Silent Bob Get Old performance in Melbourne, Australia, Kevin Smith shed some new light on the animated project his long-term ‘heterosexual life-partner’ actor Jason Mewes has been working on for the past six months in collaboration with Steve Stark the creator of the popular YouTube series SModimation, which takes audio clips from the shows on Smith’s podcast network & animates them wonderfully.

The project is a movie called Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie, that will be a blend of animation and live action footage featuring Smith & Mewes, adapted by Mewes from a script Smith had written years earlier. The project will mark the first time the pair have donned the costumes of their iconic characters since the closing chapter of Smith’s ‘New Jersey Chronicles’ film saga, 2006′s Clerks 2.

No word has been put forth yet as to a release window or distribution platform for the project, but if there’s one thing we know about Kevin Smith it’s that he’ll be shouting from the rooftops about it the second both are a lock. I for one cannot wait!

‘Hangover’ director’s un-aired HBO doc ‘Frat House’ surfaces

Todd Phillips is one of the most successful writer/director/producer’s in the adult-oriented comedy movie scene these days with huge box office winners to his name such as Old School, Road Trip and The Hangover films, but years before all the hits and fame he assembled with the help of fellow director Andrew Gurland a curious little documentary for HBO about the American college fraternity experience.

Frat House was the result and it has the dubious honour of being the only doc commissioned by HBO that never actually ended up going to air even after winning the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 1998 Sundance film festival.

A controversy arose around the events depicted being so extreme that many people refused to believe they were not staged, even in spite of Phillips and Gurland’s assurances that everything that captured was completely real and that they often could not believe what they were witnessing themselves.

After passing into near myth and legend, the film has finally emerged online in its entirety and is well worth the 1 hours watch. It’s a really great and darkly entertaining piece that also has the added benefit now of providing insight into a lot of where Phillips’s later fictional works came from.

The sci-fi action comedy ATTACK THE BLOCK will soon be hitting Australian cinemas and we have a competition to celebrate the release of this instant cult hit.

It’s inner city versus outer space and HARRY BROWN meets WAR OF THE WORLDS when aliens drop in on a London housing project and the only line of defence against the extraterrestrial invaders is a group of teenage hoodlums.

The sci-fi comedy ATTACK THE BLOCK begins as trainee nurse Sam is walking home and is robbed by a gang of hooded youths. She’s saved when the gang are distracted by a bright meteorite, which falls from the sky and hits a nearby parked car. A small alien creature leaps from the wreckage and the gang chase and kill it, dragging its ghoulish carcass to the top of the block… but bigger, more savage beasts are on the way and the estate is about to become a battleground. The hit of this year’s South By Southwest Festival, ATTACK THE BLOCK is destined for cult status and is “one of the best sci-fi/comedy/horror/action mash-ups you’re ever going to see (Collider).”

Review | True Grit

True Grit is the latest film by the director/producer duo, Joel and Ethan Coen. Creators of such films as Fargo and Millers CrossingTrue Grit is a distinctly Coen production with violence, black humour and peculiar characters.

As both Liam and Kyle attended the preview screening, we figured it would only be fitting to team up and collaborate on this review. Read more [+]
