Mecha is such a large market in the anime industry. More often then not you’ll see series after series pop up that involves robots fighting some kind of space war for a belief of some sort and it will end with a grand finish, normally with the heroes triumphant.
That said, all this mecha craze had to start somewhere and Gundam is certainly a series that helped pioneered this love for all things robot related. Madman recently have been acquiring some of the older Gundam including one of the earliest, Mobile Suit Z (Zeta) Gundam available as two collections (50 episodes) on DVD. Read more [+]

Anime fans that have been around for a while may remember an incredibly gory anime out there called Berserk. Berserk as a series is still going even today, with a Dreamcast game a while ago and a manga that has been going for two decades now as of 2010. Extremely violent fantasy anime is certainly a niche market yet also it is something that has not been catered to for a while. That said, as one of the earlier Blu-Ray launches by Madman, Claymore was released as a full collection produced by Madhouse (Record of Lodoss War, Chobits, Death Note among many others). Space is a pretty scary place. There’s no oxygen, not much light, and it seems every time we make progress in exploring the deeper voids we uncover a brutal alien civilization destined to make harvest of the human race. This is Isaac Clarke’s peril, or, it was in the original Dead Space. Now things have gotten a little more severe.

Most anime series these days are extremely linear and rather basic in their story direction. That is, told from the perspective of one single person or group. Siren Visual however has licensed and released ‘Durarara!!‘ produced by Brain’s Base (behind series such as Baccano), a series gaining popularity very quickly and taking a different perspective from the normal approach that a series may have. Bulletstorm, developed by People Can Fly in conjunction with Epic Games, involves 26th century space pirate captain Grayson Hunt as he leads his crew into fatal consequences after a failed attempt for reparation. Hunt and his cohort (including Ishi Sato, Hunt’s cyborg AI partner in the campaign) defected from their previous work as soldiers oblivious to the fact that they were assassinating innocent people for corrupt officials. The crew eventually caught light of this, escaped and resorted to raiding, robbing and picking off inexperienced bounty hunters for a living. Fast forward to present day, Hunt and Sato have drawn short straws and are fighting for their lives on a planet full of murderous natives in hopes of escape and retribution along the way.
With Bulletstorm, People Can Fly aimed to create an experience similar to early first person shooter titles like Doom, Quake and even Duke Nukem Read more [+]
The fine folks at THQ Melbourne once again opened their doors to the Space Meat team for a preview of their upcoming and just launched titles. As usual we all had a great time hanging with our fellow Melbourne video game media and checking out what THQ had coming out in the near future.
Personally I went into this preview with not much knowledge and not a lot of interest but I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of titles and as a jaded and busy critic I’m not that easily surprised.
Hit “more” for our first impressions of some of the latest THQ titles.

True Grit is the latest film by the director/producer duo, Joel and Ethan Coen. Creators of such films as Fargo and Millers Crossing – True Grit is a distinctly Coen production with violence, black humour and peculiar characters.
As both Liam and Kyle attended the preview screening, we figured it would only be fitting to team up and collaborate on this review. Read more [+]
